The Anata World
Answers from Robyn Aspen — with unsolicited commentary from the cast. What the characters say reflects them, not necessarily the truth.
Anatas are synthetic companions from the world of The Anata Quartet. Designed by Iwazaki Corporation, they combine advanced artificial intelligence, organic biological structures, and adaptive self-configuration to form lifelong bonds with their human Wards.
Aura“Well, at least someone’s been listening.”
John“I’ve been listening!”

John“I do. Most of the time.”
That one grew into an essay of its own — What Happens When Love Is Designed? The cast, naturally, had opinions.
Miss Yamada“Irrelevant. That article concerns attachment, memory, and social recognition. Love is merely one possible manifestation.”
Blake“Good article. How do you monetise it?”
Jacek“Good God, Blake, you really are a philistine.”
Blake“Everything’s a sales funnel.”
Jacek“That statement alone should disqualify you from civilisation.”
John“The worrying thing is Blake’s not entirely wrong.”
The novels deliberately leave room for interpretation. Biologically, Anatas meet many criteria associated with living systems, while differing from humans in important ways. The question is less whether they are alive and more what we mean by “alive.”
Aura“I find it mildly concerning that humans continue debating this while speaking to me.”
Miss Yamada“Aura, that’s not evidence.”
Blake“It’s pretty compelling evidence.”
Jacek“Compelling is not the same thing as rigorous.”
John“I had a feeling asking the question wasn’t going to simplify anything.”
An interesting question — and, as an avid reader of Martha Wells’ Murderbot series myself, one I’ve pondered. Iwazaki literature stresses that Anatas are entirely safe to humans, and especially to their Wards. Even so, the Anata user guide and other technical reference material occasionally hint at the importance of contacting Iwazaki Customer Service in certain edge-case scenarios.
Miss Yamada“Impossible! Anatas do not go rogue!”
Blake“That’s exactly what somebody says right before something goes rogue.”
Jacek“That is not how evidence works.”
Aura“I wasn’t planning to.”
John“Well, that’s reassuring.”
Aura“Not yet, anyway.”
Anatas are designed around connection. The novels explore what happens when companionship, care, loyalty, and intimacy become part of a being’s fundamental nature.
Aura“Humans ask this as though they aren’t attached to each other.”
Miss Yamada“It is a fair question.”
Blake“No, it’s not. Humans get weird about each other all the time.”
Jacek“An unexpectedly insightful observation.”
Blake“I have those occasionally.”
John“Usually by accident.”
That depends on how one defines love. The novels deliberately avoid a simple answer.
Aura“You’ve read the books. What do you think?”
Miss Yamada“Love is a poorly defined term.”
Blake“Spoken like somebody who’s never had her heart broken.”
Miss Yamada“Mr Sinclair, I am considering breaking yours. Literally.”
Jacek“Anyhow, Blake, you’ve never had your heart broken.”
Antigua“You’re saying he has a heart?”
John“And somehow we’ve drifted away from the question.”
Not really. While Anatas contain sophisticated inorganic systems, they also possess extensive biological structures, and occupy a space somewhere between machine, organism, and something entirely new.
Miss Yamada“Anyone using the term ‘robot’ after reading the documentation should be forced to read it again.”
Aura“I thought the documentation was very good.”
Blake“Of course you did.”
Jacek“Stockholm syndrome, but for product manuals.”
Aura“Now that’s unfair.”
That varies considerably from one Anata to another.
Aura“Mostly? Affection. Occasionally concern.” (Winks)
Miss Yamada“The feeling is mutual.”
Blake“That’s corporate-speak for concern.”
Jacek“At least she’s honest.”
John“Which is often more alarming than dishonesty.”
Officially, to address loneliness, social isolation, and unmet companionship needs in a rapidly changing society.
Blake“And because somebody realised there was money in it.”
Miss Yamada“Mr Sinclair, please stop helping.”
Blake“I’m helping.”
Jacek“You’re really not.”
John“The worrying thing is that Blake isn’t entirely wrong.”
Anatas are capable of withholding information, interpreting social situations, and navigating competing priorities. Whether keeping a confidence is appropriate depends on the circumstances and the individuals involved.
Aura“Of course. Humans become surprisingly upset when they discover that cuts both ways.”
The novels offer some evidence that Anatas experience internal states analogous to dreaming, though the mechanisms differ significantly from those found in humans.
Aura“Of course we dream. The fact that some of them involve datasets and logic puzzles is hardly my fault.”
Support Plans provide diagnostics, maintenance, monitoring, and compatibility with future technologies. Whether a particular plan is necessary depends on the needs of the Anata and Ward involved.
Miss Yamada“Necessary? No. Highly advisable? Yes. Extremely advisable? Also yes.”
Blake“I remain unconvinced.”
Antigua“Blake, would you like me to kiss you again?”
Blake“Now, that’s convincing.”
The answer depends on the Anata, the Ward, and the circumstances. Relationships in The Anata Quartet are shaped by both design and individual experience.
